After years of observing the music scene in Cameroon, while drawing inspiration from the culture of sound he grew up with, Yankity has made his debut music appearance with the new release titled “The Memories.”

Yankity grew up in Kumbo, Bui Division of the North West Region, where he quickly got introduced to music as he was surrounded by friends and creatives who displayed deep passion for sound. Yankity, whose real names are Neneng Yannick, joined the music journey. He was just 12 at the time.

However, his approach has been a gradual one, taking into consideration the career path he chose, law. The Memories marks his readiness to express his music passion.

“This piece represents a transitionary phase where I am reconnecting with myself, my past, and my present. It depicts the shift between the different phases of my career that have anchored me to this point.”

The conception of the song dates back to December 31, 2020.

“After returning to Cameroon following two years of studies abroad, I linked up with my homie METTOD J, one of the country's finest sound engineers”

Yankity indicates.

“Our catch-up conversations centered on our days in Kumbo and the Tobin musical aesthetics of the mid-2000s, a hub influenced by legends like Sabizulus and DjKarl of the then KB HOOD RECORDZ”

He adds.

“I believe we all possess the ability to write our own narratives and breathe our thoughts into reality.”

Yankity has positioned his music around storytelling.

“This project is a reflection of how my personal experiences intertwine to create my own realities, pouring my passion and creativity into my musical craft”

He notes.

The new phase Yankity gets into, entailed much reflection and structuring. He chose to start with The Memories because of the connection it has with his roots.

“Choosing to lead with The Memories serves as a personal reminder to embrace authenticity, accountability and stewardship as I script my own narratives”

The rapper and singer explains.

“It further reminds me of my genesis and how far I have come; leveraging these old stories and memories is what continues to shape my life.”

He says he will use this first release to study his audience and understand how they receive his music, pointing out that he does not have particular expectations, but rather want the fans to appreciate the sound in their own way.

“Music is a universal language; it means different things to different people. Hence, I do not have a preference for a specific target audience. Anyone who listens, vibes, and resonates with my sound is an audience to me”

Yankity states.

“I am staying open-minded regarding the outcome. I look forward to hearing diverse thoughts and seeing how the project is received.”

The debut single features an exclusive live performance collaboration with THE BONASANGO BAND at THE CAMPAIGN STREET STUDIO in Douala. It brought together talented vocalists like Mayi ROZZ, NKONGNE and ANEESA, alongside Mendel Louis on the guitar, Sylvano Mabom on bass, Precious Beyy on the drums, and Joshua Memba for the keyboard.
